Matt graduated from University of Nottingham and has been a GP since 1990. He is now the local GP, and runs his surgery from Rosamund Street Health Centre. He lives with wife Charlie, an English teacher at Weatherfield Comprehensive at No 6 Coronation Street, renting it from Natalie Barnes.

Since arriving in the street Matt has become friends with neighbours Curly Watts and Ashley Peacock; though wife Charlie is not to kean on husband Matt being friendly with next door neighbours Maxine and Ashley, as Charlie has nothing in common with Maxine at all.

Matt works at the health centre alongside Practice Nurse Molly Hardcastle, receptionist Gail Platt, and cleaner Edna Miller.

Matt was helping Maxine and Ashley with fertility problems. When Ashley was in hospital for treatment, Maxine and Matt got very drunk and had sex. Maxine discovered she was pregnant and did not know who was the father though insisted it was Ashley's. Matt really wanted the child to be his since his wife, Charlie, didn't want children. Matt left Weatherfield with Charlie soon after Joshua Peacock was born, deciding to save his marriage leaving Maxine and Ashley to patch up their relationship and bring up Joshua.

Charlie and Matt have had a rocky relationship. She drinks quite a bit and doesn't want children of her own though Matt does. She made friends with Emma Watts but considered Maxine to be common. She found her biological mother after she discovered that one of her students, Luke Ashton was her half brother. There didn't seem to be a lot of love lost between them all.

Charlie was eventually sacked for drinking on the job and later horrified to find out that Matt had a one night stand with Maxine, which possibly resulted in the baby, Joshua Peacock. She left Matt but eventually reconciled with him on the condition that they leave Weatherfield for good.

Appeared: 23 September 2001 - 4 March 2002 (non-speaking in first appearance) half-brother, who was also conveniently, a pupil in her class at Weatherfield Comprehensive. He waged a graffiti was against Charlie when he found out they were related.

Later he went out with Sarah Platt.

November 1998: newly-wedded Des Barnes is injured whilst trying to defend his new stepson from drug dealers and later dies in hospital. His new wife Natalie  inherits the property. The next month Natalie decides that she cannot live in No6 and buys the Rovers Return from Alec Gilroy with the intention of selling No6.

January 1999: Deciding it isn't a good time to sell, Natalie rents out No6 on a three-month lease to  Sally Webster. In the February, feeling lonely and missing her fiancée during the week, Sharon Gaskell moves in with Sally during the weeks, leaving at the weekend so Sally's children can stay.

March 1999: Following a very public arguement in the Rovers bar, Sally walks out of No6 and moves back into No13 whilst Kevin is in Germany. Sharon has to move in with Rita at No10. The house then stands empty until November 1999, when on the anniversary of Des' death, Natalie decides she needs to put the past behind her and puts the house on the market.

February 2000: The house is still unsold; Natalie's sister Debs  finishes her job working as a hairdresser and beautician on cruise ships and unexpectedly turns up in Weatherfield. Natalie lets her stay in No6.

November 2000: Debs leaves the house and runs off to Newcastle with Vinny.

December 2000: Still unable to sell the house, Natalie lets the house to   Matt and Charlie Ramsden.

April 2002: The future of the Ramsden's marriage is in doubt as Charlie turns to drink and then has an abortion to the horror of her broody husband Matt. Their marriage is rocked to the core by Matt's revelation that he had a one-night-stand with neighbour Maxine Peacock and she may be pregnant by Matt. However, after a short-term split they decide to try and make a go of their marriage - but away from Weatherfield, and they do a midnight flit from No6.

The house stays empty for a short while and later in 2002, a family of four moves in. The Nelsons are Tommy and Angela with their teenage children, Katy and Craig. They have a secret. THey are really the Harris family under the witness protection program. After the secret comes out they take their own name back. Katy falls in love with Martin Platt after he was kind and helpful to her when she developed diabetes. Martin soon returns her affection and they move in together in the flat over the old DIY shop. in January of 2005, after Martin declined to marry Katy, Katy gets pregnant. Martin is reluctantly going to be a new father again.
